Interview with Rajsthan Patrika

English translation of my interview with Rajsthan Patrika

PATRIKA . What motivated you to take up Phd in the department of Inorganic
and Physical Chemistry?

RISHI: Since my school days I had inclination towards chemistry and during college days I found spectroscopy very interesting. This interest drove me to opt for spectroscopy in Ph.D. That is why, I joined department of Inorganic and Physical chemistry where I am in physical chemistry branch, working in the field of Raman spectroscopy.

PATRIKA: How did you find your way to IISc?

RISHI: During M. Sc I came to know about IISc. My seniors told that it is the best research institute in India and in my final year of M.Sc I made up my mind to work hard to get into IISc. I focused on basics and it paid me in qualifying examination as well as in interview.

PATRIKA: What are your research interests?

RISHI: As I said my research interest lies in the field of spectroscopy in general and Raman spectroscopy in particular. Since vibrational information is specific to the chemical bonds and symmetry of molecules. Therefore, it provides a fingerprint by which the molecule can be identified. To be more specific about my research work, I am trying to understand the role of the solvent polarity on the excited state structure and dynamics using time resolved Raman spectroscopy.

PATRIKA: You have served as the member of Academic Committee in IISc. How was your experience?

RISHI: It was a mixed experience while working in the capacity of the member of academic committee of the students’ council. You come across many academic problems of the student community including student -advisor relations. It is satisfying if you solve the problem and make sure that they do not repeat in future. On the one hand sometimes even after so much of efforts things do not improve at all.

PATRIKA: How has been your experience so far as the chairman of Students’
Council Team?

RISHI: It has been an enriching experience. I learned a lot from the spectrum of people, I came across and still I am learning from the interactions. I have been fortunate that I got good team members who are dedicated and enthusiastic. Student issues have been very well solved by the joint efforts of various committee members. Administration has been very co-operative and supportive so far.

PATRIKA : What changes do you want to bring in the campus as the chairman of Students’ council?
RISHI:First thing that I would like to do is that campus should be as student friendly as possible. For that awareness among the students should improve. Our council has put lot of efforts in improving awareness among the student community. We motivated lot of students to join us and work for the community. We have already achieved what we promised in this short period of time. The cohesion among the students has increased now. It should continue and students should be socially active. This is the basic change that I want to bring. Science without social sense leads nowhere. Science with sense makes the individual prosper and help the nation progress.

PATRIKA: What all challenges have your faced so far as the chairman of Students council?
RISHI: The first thing is to balance between 2S one is Science and other is Student community welfare. Sometimes it seems very hard to manage both at the same time. But you know, strength lies in team work and we have overcome all problems by collective efforts. Till now, most challenging has been dealing with student- advisor relationships. Other challenging thing has been improvement in the basic amenities provided to students. Sometimes basic issues often cross the minds of authorities. Our challenge is to bring these things to their notice and constantly follow them up till the logical solution is achieved.

PATRIKA: What is your view on Students’ politics? Do you agree with the statement that India has a mature political system? Please elaborate.
RISHI: I am in favor of student politics but I strongly feel that student politics should not be supported or funded by political parties. It makes the whole environment political and issues related to students’ welfare become secondary. Apart from their college life like any other Indian citizen, students also understand and keep a view about politics and let them show their inclination in elections. I do not agree that India has a mature political system we still fight elections on the basis of issues which are irrelevant. Our focus should be on overall development of nation but unfortunately, nation is left behind in front of trivial issues.

PATRIKA: What would have you been doing if you were not in the field of Science?
RISHI: I would have gone for civil services.

PATRIKA: What would be your advice for the students who are pursuing science?

RISHI: Work hard, be motivated and pursue your passion. At times experiments may not work and you may feel depressed. In such conditions your motivation and passion can overcome all difficulties and you can make progress. In this regard, I would like to say that students should read Edison’s and Abdul Kalam’s life stories.

Lovely Indian Media

I had deep interest towards reading newspaper since my schooldays.I did my schooling from rural area and was fond of Danik Jagaran(Hindi News Paper).I used to love the editorial page in the good old days(even today I like). After completing my 10th examination,I got admission in MG Inter College and had no choice other than to stay in the hostel as College was around 80km from my village.I continued to read the Danik Jagaran almost daily(except during exam time)in hostel also.I had great respect for the media and I use to believe what all have been written in the newspaper as in my Innocent opinion(that time)that journalist can not be biased/inclined towards any political party/any institution/organization.I moved to Delhi for the preparation for the civil services however, soon I decided to take the admission in the MSc(Chemistry) from Jamia Millia Islamia.I decided to subscribe the English newspaper(TOI)and later I opted for the Hindu(heard that Editorial is really good).I continued to take "The Hindu" for one year but at some point I doubted that whether this paper is pro-communist and anti-BJP.My intelligence used to question my faith in media and after some months of fight between "Intelligence" and "Faith" finally intelligence proved that its intelligent. Some time I used to smell Anti-India and Pro-China stand in this newspaper. Finally,I stopped taking newspaper and after that I have never bought "The Hindu" paper.
